Sights/Sites: Irreplaceable Alternative Space
“What is most important in a piece of work is not its meaning but what it does and what it induces.” - Jean-François Lyotard

Sights/Sites

The name “Sights/Sites,” as a pun on “insight” in Chinese, holds two meanings. One emphasizes the offering of one’s opinion, or “sight,” whereas the other stresses the appearances of a site’s characteristics. The “becoming” of an alternative space is not merely the copying of a single pattern. Rather, each developing body in Taiwan has its unique local spirit, cultural characteristics, and spatial habits, from which diverse amoebae are born. The phrase “Sights/Sites” served as a starting point to establish thought and perspectives. By proposing unique viewpoints as the direction, this exhibition investigated how the creators responded to the larger frame of the social environment, globalization, and education system and proposed their private understanding. The exhibition utilized little narratives to fight against the development of arts that are politically correct but highly homogeneous. Here, the private stance is not an inner drama filled with murmurs but a heterogeneous, private perspective proposed after digestion and reflection on saccharine fashion and left-wing trends. In addition, “Sights/Sites” also emphasizes locality, which is not only the differences in geographical environments that are the unavoidable results of location differences but also the concept of a site that contains mutual memories and connections. The output is not a simple reproduction of placing certain cultural symbols together to compose mosaics. Instead, they are thoughts and sensitivities being digested and crystallized, becoming shared experiences that coexist with the place.

A Platform of Variability

“Sights/Sites” is an exhibition where thoughts are consolidated and places are encountered. This title is not a rigid frame that has been designed, awaiting corresponding items that fit the vacancies. Rather, “Sights/Sites” would like to generate discussion and gather thoughts that, instead of being focused, can be wanton and aimless. “Sights/Sites” could be an elastic frame, a platform that is continuously developing, to replace the spatial realm and use the historical context and future of the realm as inspirations to compose a spatial and temporal timeline of its components (the past), of its viewers and participants (the present), and of the talents who are about to join (the future.) The timeline lies along the north–south spatial axis and projects the imagination of an irreplaceable alternative place, breaking the circle of trust and orders in one single area, creating a new virtuous cycle through the mutual nourishing of geographical and spatial realms. As an exhibition, “Sights/Sites” also sows seeds in the art world, providing an opportunity for young creators who are still in the stage of transformation or who have not yet formed their own shapes, giving them voice and strengthening their self-belief.

An Irreplaceable Alternative

An alternative space is not the edge that has been shunned by the central, dominant discourses; rather, the spirit it represents is the belief in experimenting with the spatial realm and actualizing the self. It does not exist to praise the principles of homogeneity, does not attach to that which the majority consider correct, and does not submit to dogmatic principles. On the contrary, it is a sharp weapon that fights against reality and deviates from the mainstream on the basis of the desire to create. The stance presented by the alternative space is not only a developmental dimension separated from the popular arts; its overall development also intervenes in the society and arts. This intervention is not an attempt to construct a more effective truth; an alternative is not meant to replace other spaces. An alternative represents the focus on heterogeneity. It is a different pattern, a patchwork that gives voice to different characteristics. It hopes to raise its voice with other believers despite the fact that they may not share a consensus. Its main pursuit is for its uniqueness to be discovered and be seen. With belief, imagination, and ideals, it is on the summit of the waves, trying to maintain an absolute balance.
