原啟十八─ 畫壇老頑童劉其偉特展

畫壇老頑童劉其偉，生於1912年，卒於2002年，經歷中、日文化的洗禮淬鍊，擔任過教職、公務員，集電機工程師、畫家、作家、探險家、文化藝術人類學家、教授及保育代言人等多樣身分於一身，畫壇尊稱他為「劉老」。

劉老自學繪畫始於38歲，第一件發表的作品是《榻榻米上熟睡的小兒子》，早期多以水彩為媒材，後期畫作則呈現多樣的媒材，利用棉布、粉彩、蠟筆、壓克力顏料等，以簡潔線條和豐富色彩表現主題，內容則蘊含劉老對生命的關懷、對時事的關心以及對親人的思念，並首創以注音符號「ㄌㄧㄡˊㄑㄧˊㄨㄟˇ」的個人特色簽名。他曾說：「繪畫最重要的不是技巧，而是如何傳遞一份真摯與情感」，觀賞劉老的繪畫作品，會充分感受到「老頑童」的智慧、純真、幽默與誠懇。

劉老是一位畫家也是一位探險家，1993年他以81歲高齡組探險隊親往大洋洲巴布亞新幾內亞，進行石器文物的藝術研究，這也是他最後一次前往蠻荒地區進行的長期探險。此次旅程採集大量的文物並撰寫成專書，留下珍貴的史料提供學術機構研究。劉老曾說：「我不是畫家，也不是人類學家，我都是業餘的，只是玩玩，但我玩出名堂」。由於在藝術、歷史及文化上的貢獻，他獲頒臺灣省政府一等獎狀、文藝獎章及華夏一等獎章，並榮獲新店市首屆第一號榮譽市民。

中原大學今年（2015年）喜逢創校60週年，為紀念並感佩自1974年起受聘至中原大學建築系擔任教職至1992年退休，劉老為中原學子付出18年的光陰，藝術中心特別策劃劉其偉特展，藉劉老的畫作及考察時所用的物品、影像資料，以「經典畫作區」及「世界探索區」展區呈現他精彩的一生。

「原啟十八─畫壇老頑童劉其偉特展」的展名，意義在於：「原」代表中原大學，也有「緣分」之意，用以表達劉老與中原大學18年的感情，退休那一刻並不是結束，而是另一個關係的開始，藉由他的探險精神與對生命的關懷，豐富所有中原師生的心，並再次開啟劉老與中原的新緣分。

18 Years Together – Solo Exhibition by Max Liu

Artist Max Liu (1912-2002), under the influence of Chinese and Japanese cultures, has served as a faculty member, civil servant, electrical engineer, painter, writer, explorer, anthropologist, professor, and conservation ambassador, earning him the name “Liu Lau.”

Liu Lau began learning how to paint when he was 38 years old and My Little Boy Sound Asleep on the Tatami was his first masterpiece. In the early days, Liu mostly used watercolors to paint simple lines with a variety of colors to portray his concern for life and current events as well as love for his family. Liu became the first to sign his name with Mandarin Phonetic Symbols. He once said that the most important thing about painting is not the skills but rather how to sincerely express one’s emotions. Liu’s artworks bring you into his world of intelligence, innocence, humor, and sincerity.

As both an artist and an explorer, Liu formed an expedition to the Independent State of Papua New Guinea at the age of 81 to conduct an artistic research on stone tools; that was his last big adventure in the wilderness. During that journey, Liu collected large amounts of stone tools and wrote precious historical data into a book as a reference for future academic research. Liu said, “I’m not a painter, nor am I an anthropologist; I’m an amateur, just trying out different things and enjoying it.” His contributions to art, history, and culture earned him multiple certificates of merit from the Taiwanese government as well as the honor of the first honorary citizen of Hsintien City.

In celebration of Chung Yuan Christian University’s 60^th anniversary this year and in memory of Liu’s 18 years (1977-1992) of dedication as a faculty member at the Department of Architecture, the school organized an exhibition displaying Liu’s wonderful life with his masterpieces in two sections: Classic Works and World Exploration.

18 Years Together – Solo Exhibitionby Max Liu symbolizes Liu’s 18 years at CYCU with Yuan referring to Chung “Yuan” as well as the word “fate” in Chinese. His retirement did not mark the end but rather the beginning of a new relationship by re-introducing Liu’s spirit of adventure and care for life to enrich the lives of Chung Yuan teachers and students.
